Newly recruited gastroenterologist to start practising Jan. 1
RED DEER — Local and area residents with gastrointestinal conditions now have improved access to health services with the arrival of a newly recruited gastroenterologist.
Dr. Betty Cai will begin practising out of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and Central Alberta Digestive Disease Specialists as of Jan. 1. The hospital’s gastrointestinal clinic provides interdisciplinary health services for patients diagnosed with an inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr. Cai received her medical education in Ireland, and completed her residency and fellowship in London, Ont. She previously worked as a locum physician in Ontario.
“The recruitment of Dr. Cai will improve the assessment and treatment of gastrointestinal conditions for patients in Red Deer and across central Alberta. This is great news for our growing city and surrounding areas,” says Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health and MLA for Red Deer-North. “Our government continues to work with our partners to recruit physicians to communities across the province, improving access to healthcare services for all Albertans.”
“Red Deer is the third largest city in the best province in Canada,” adds Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer-South. “It is good to see medical professionals coming to Red Deer to serve families and individuals in our wonderful community.”
The addition of Dr. Cai brings the number of gastroenterologists working in Red Deer to five.
“I spent some time at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre during my elective, so I may be a familiar face already,” says Dr. Cai. “I am new to Alberta, so I’m looking forward to being close to the mountains.”
Alberta Health Services continues to recruit for physicians across its Central Zone to meet community needs. AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.
