Garren Skeels isn’t a stranger to giving back. As you would expect, the teen from Rimbey, AB is very active with sports, 4-H and lending a hand on the family farm - Anchor D Ranch Simmentals. Something you might not expect, Garren has raised nearly $54,000 for a number of charities across Central Alberta.
His latest donation, $5,400 to the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation which directly supports equipment purchase for Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, happened just a few months ago.
It was December when Garren called the Foundation office to inform the staff he would be making a generous donation to the hospital. The Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre was chosen as the 2018 recipient because he had broken his arm a few months earlier and spent time in the hospital. Garren wanted to give back to the doctors and nurses that treated him so well.
Every year on the family farm, Garren offers an item up for bids off the mystery lot – usually an animal raised on the farm. At the auction sale, Garren sold one of his goat which was then donated back to be sold again…and again -- a process that occurred a number of times until the goat finally sold and raising an astonishing $5,400!
